An extremely rare, heavy, and internationally traded silver ornamental spoon, manufactured in 1903 by the renowned silver factory H. Hooijkaas in Schoonhoven. This impressive spoon combines high-quality Dutch silversmithing with a fascinating export history to the United Kingdom. An absolute showpiece for the serious collector.
The openwork and very richly decorated handle is beautifully crowned, top-heavy, by an extremely detailed silver VOC ship (three-masted) under full sail. The handle itself is designed as openwork braiding (twisted design) and flows into a sleek, (smooth) spoon bowl via an elegant cast Renaissance ornamental mask.

The back of this spoon tells a complete historical story and features an impressive collection of razor-sharp silver hallmarks, export stamps, and British import marks:
  • Maker's mark: H 13 in a rectangle for the firm H. Hooijkaas (Schoonhoven, active period 1883-1903).
  • Fineness mark: Walking Lion with a 1 (1st grade silver, .925 sterling silver – required for export to England).
  • Assay Office mark: Minerva head with the assay office letter M (Schoonhoven).
  • Date letter: The clear Dutch T for the production year 1903.
  • Pseudo-marks: Three finely struck historical fantasy/pseudo-marks in the bowl to enhance the antique guild appearance.
  • British Importer: The oval mark A L of the well-known London importer A. Lewis, who imported the spoon directly into England in 1903.
  • London Import Hallmarks: The official English import hallmarks from 1903, including the 'Lion Passant' (sterling silver), date letter h (1903), and the import-map/assay office marks. An old scratch inscription "1266 PA" is also visible.
Specifications:
  • Material: 1st grade silver (.925 Sterling Silver)
  • Maker: H. Hooijkaas (H 13)
  • Place of origin: Schoonhoven (Netherlands) & imported in London (UK)
  • Dating / Date letter: T = 1903 (both Dutch and English hallmarked for 1903)
  • Weight: 62.2 grams (very heavy, robust quality)
  • Length: 21.3 cm (213 mm)
  • Condition: In absolute top condition. Beautifully brightly polished with a sublime dark shadow patina in the deeper parts of the ship's rigging and the hallmarks.
A beautiful spoon that holds a unique position in the antique market due to the combination of the Dutch VOC theme, its heavy weight, and the double Dutch-English hallmarking.
