A charming fork: this exclusive antique silver ginger fork (also perfectly suitable for use as a serving fork for pickles, olives, or preserved fruit) from the year 1875.
This refined piece of silver was crafted by the renowned Utrecht master silversmiths Pieter & Hendrik Jan Harderwijk. The object is in fantastic antique condition and reflects the absolute pinnacle of Dutch engraving craftsmanship from the later Biedermeier period.
The firm P. & H.J. Harderwijk was a highly respected family business of gold- and silversmiths active in the city of Utrecht between 1843 and 1901. The workshop was known for the production of high-quality small silver items, luxury cutlery, and fine tableware. The Harderwijk brothers distinguished themselves through their fabulous engraving work, in which they succeeded in transforming traditional, sturdy silver base forms into highly refined works of art with fashionable floral decorations. Works featuring their specific master mark (VH above the number 8) are cherished by collectors for their expressive decorations and high craftsmanship quality.
What makes this fork a true eye-catcher is the fabulously beautiful hand-engraving on the wide, undulating handle. The front is decorated with a lush, brilliantly engraved floral motif—inspired by a radiant sunflower or daisy—surrounded by fine leafy scrolls and a meticulously chased pearl and dot border along the contours. The transition to the four slender, gracefully curved tines is executed with a wide, boat-shaped bowl, which is characteristic of an authentic ginger fork for elegantly scooping up delicacies with some syrup or juice.
The back of the handle displays a rich and perfectly legible row of four deeply stamped Dutch silver hallmarks (as clearly visible in the macro photo):
  • The sought-after master mark VH over 8 in a square (firm P. & H.J. Harderwijk, Utrecht)
  • The fineness mark, the Walking Lion with the 2 (for 2nd grade silver, .833)
  • The Minerva head (Utrecht assay office, partially worn here)
  • The date letter q for the year 1875
