A charming and refined masterpiece from the early Biedermeier period: this exclusive antique silver fork from the year 1847.
The fork was crafted by the Amsterdam master silversmith Johannes Christiaan Rennefeld. The fork is in fantastic antique condition and displays a magnificent combination of sculpted silver relief and sublime engraving.
Johannes Christiaan Rennefeld was a highly renowned and respected goldsmith and silversmith who was active in Amsterdam between 1836 and 1876. Rennefeld was known within Amsterdam's craft circles for his exceptional skill in repoussé and chasing of silver. His studio excelled in producing small silver items and luxury cutlery with detailed relief decorations in the then-highly fashionable Neo-Rococo and Biedermeier styles. Works with his master's mark (a star above the initials JR) are cherished by collectors for their expressive decorations and the high craftsmanship of the silverware.

What makes this fork a true eye-catcher is the lavishly decorated, wide handle in a distinct Neo-Rococo style. The front of the handle is chased with a rich, three-dimensional pattern of curling acanthus leaves and floral motifs that flow beautifully with the curve of the stem. The back of the handle is smoothly finished and features a razor-sharp, hand-engraved monogram 'AW' in elegant Gothic lettering. The three slender tines connect to the stem via an elegant bend. This fork is perfectly suited for use as a luxury cake fork, pastry fork, or as stylish dessert cutlery.
The reverse shows a rich and crystal-clear row of four deeply struck Dutch silver hallmarks (as can be beautifully seen in the macro photos):
  • The sought-after master's mark Star above JR in a square (Johannes Christiaan Rennefeld)
  • The year letter N for the year 1847
  • The quality mark the Walking Lion with the 2 (for 2nd grade silver, .833)
  • The Minerva head (assay office Amsterdam)
