A charming and refined piece of late 19th-century Dutch table silver: this exclusive antique silver fork from the year 1872. This delicate small fork was crafted by the well-known Amsterdam master silversmith Gerrit van de Velden. The object is in a brilliant, shiny condition and reflects the absolute pinnacle of Dutch engraving craftsmanship from the Biedermeier and Neo-Rococo period.
Gerrit van de Velden was a highly regarded gold- and silversmith who was active in Amsterdam during the second half of the 19th century. Within Amsterdam guild circles, he was known for his excellent eye for detail and his specialization in fine cutting and engraving work for small silver items. His maker's mark (GV underlined by a number, in this case, GV 4) can be found on various luxury cutlery pieces and presentation objects from this period. Works by Van de Velden are cherished for their refined balance between sturdy functional silver and highly detailed, artistic decorations.

What makes this fork a true eye-catcher is the beautiful hand-engraving on the wide, elegantly undulating handle. The handle is decorated with a lush bouquet of flowers and fine leaves, framed by graceful acanthus scrolls. The background is filled with a meticulous, hand-dotted texture (so-called stippling), which creates a beautiful matte-gloss contrast. The four slender tines are connected to the wide handle via a graceful curve. This fork is extremely suitable for use as a luxury cake fork, pastry fork, or as an elegant piece of dessert cutlery.
The back of the handle shows a rich and perfectly clear row of four deeply stamped Dutch silver hallmarks (as can be seen razor-sharply in the detail photo):
  • The sought-after maker's mark GV 4 in a square (Gerrit van de Velden)
  • The year letter n for the year 1872
  • The standard mark, the Walking Lion with the 2 (for 2nd grade silver, .833)
  • The Minerva head with the letter A (assay office Amsterdam)
