An extraordinarily charming, elegant, and rare piece of mid-19th-century Dutch silverware: this exclusive antique silver ginger fork (also perfectly suitable for use as a luxury serving fork for pickles, olives, or preserved fruit) from the year 1862 and was made by Egbertus Johannes Jansen, who was active from 1861 to 1868.

This refined piece of silver is a magnificent example of the rich, handmade silversmithing from the heyday of the Dutch Biedermeier period. The object is in fantastic antique condition and stands out for its lush decorations.

What makes this fork a true eye-catcher is the beautiful hand-engraving on the wide, ergonomically curved handle. The front of the handle is decorated with a large, deeply engraved flower (rose motif) framed by graceful scrollwork and a finely chased edge along the undulating contours. The transition to the four slender, gracefully curved tines features a wide, boat-shaped base with decorative openwork (ajour) cutouts and an additional engraved flower bud. This specific model is characteristic of an authentic ginger fork, designed to elegantly scoop up ginger balls or preserved fruits with some syrup or juice.
The back of the handle shows a rich and clear row of four deeply struck Dutch silver hallmarks (clearly visible in the macro photos):
  • The maker's mark * E JJ of Egbertus Johannes Jansen
  • The date letter C for the year 1862
  • The fineness mark, the Walking Lion with the 2 (for 2nd grade silver, .833)
  • The Minerva head with the letter A (assay office of Amsterdam)
