This antique silver tea scoop is a magnificent example of high-quality 19th-century Amsterdam silversmithing.

The item was handcrafted in 1864 and is in good condition. As beautifully depicted in the photos, the scoop features an elegantly shaped, wide boat-shaped bowl with wavy edges, specifically designed to perfectly scoop loose tea leaves from an antique tea caddy. Both the inside of the bowl and the beautifully undulating handle are richly adorned with extremely delicate, handmade engravings of detailed flowers and foliage, characteristic of the romantic Dutch Biedermeier style.

This scoop carries a special historical narrative. It was forged in the renowned Amsterdam workshop of Wed. Jan van der Velden, then managed by the female silversmith Wijanda van Weerden (active in the second half of the 19th century). Her pieces are known for their sublime level of detail, flowing forms, and excellent quality. A charming, small-scale luxury product that is a guaranteed eye-catcher when serving an exclusive high tea or as a valuable addition to your silver collection.

For the discerning collector, the quality and legibility of the silver hallmarks are crucial. The macro image clearly identifies the official historical Dutch hallmarks:
  • Running Lion (2): The legal fineness mark in a hexagon, indicating official 2nd grade Dutch silver (.833).
  • Maker's Mark: The official registered smith's mark with the widow's initials (WV) beneath a slanted hammer in a square, the characteristic mark of the Amsterdam silversmith's workshop Wed. Jan van der Velden (Wijanda van Weerden).
  • Minerva Head with the letter A: The official assay office mark of Amsterdam.
  • Date Letter e: The official year mark guaranteeing the exact production year 1864.
