Silver tea caddy, A. de Rooy, Amsterdam, 1747
Museum silver tea caddy made by the master Anthony de Rooy active in Amsterdam from 1731 to 1754. Born in Arnhem, Protestant, son of Paulus, Brouwer and Elisabeth Duyn. From 1731 master silversmith, died in 1754 on the Laurierstraat.
The tea caddy features a heraldic engraving with 6 fish on one side and a letter monogram BHE (!) under a baronial crown on the other side.
Provided with the following hallmarks: City hallmark of Amsterdam, Lion climbing under crown, province of Holland standard mark silver 934/1000. Date letter N, based on the shape of the city mark of Amsterdam and the lion climbing, for 1747.
Crowned O, later tax mark from 1807, (capital letter O, the first letter for the Dutch word 'Onbelast' = tax-free; no tax had to be paid)
There is a key stroke at the bottom.
