Silver bag bracket with bag hook, including GL Schuiten, Groningen, ca. 1805
Groningen silver purse bracket with purse hook. The silver purse bracket is attributed to Gerardus Lucas Schuiten, active from 1798 to 1811 in Groningen with master mark GS. The purse hook was made by A dries Rienks S teltman, registered in Leek. He became a master in 1859 and died in 1902. The back of the bracket of the purse also bears the master mark of Adries Rienks Steltman.
In my opinion, the silver purse bracket was made by Gerardus Lucas Schuiten, during the French occupation. These were turbulent times, the bracket was not hallmarked. Later, the unhallmarked purse bracket was possibly modified by another silversmith and provided with a belt hook. This silversmith offered the complete set for inspection after which it was hallmarked, including the date letter J for 1893 on the bracket and belt hook.
The bag handle features a beautifully embossed Biblical scene and depicts the story of Hagar and Ishmael who were sent away by Abraham.
The bracket is marked with master mark GS and master mark AS2. The bag hook is marked with AS2. Furthermore, the year letter j is struck for 1893. Finally, marked with second content mark and Minerva head.
