18th century silver tobacco box with mother of pearl top and bottom.
The tobacco box dates from around 1740 and features an exquisitely carved mother-of-pearl plaque of 4 Biblical scenes, namely: Flight into Egypt, The Birth Annunciation, The Adoration of the 3 Wise Men and the Birth of Jesus.
The best mother-of-pearl artists in the Golden Age worked with shells brought from the East by the VOC. Most mother-of-pearl artists worked in Amsterdam in the 18th century.
