Silver tobacco box, Amsterdam (?), 18th century

18th century silver tobacco box with mother of pearl top and bottom.

The tobacco box dates from around 1740 and features an exquisitely carved mother-of-pearl plaque of 4 Biblical scenes, namely: Flight into Egypt, The Birth Annunciation, The Adoration of the 3 Wise Men and the Birth of Jesus.

The best mother-of-pearl artists in the Golden Age worked with shells brought from the East by the VOC. Most mother-of-pearl artists worked in Amsterdam in the 18th century.

There is a damage in the corner of a mother of pearl plaque. Damage is: approx. 15 x 3 mm.
