Are you looking for a breathtaking piece of Dutch tableware with a rich history?
This extremely elegant antique silver serving slice (highly suitable as a pastry or cake slice) is a masterful example of early antique craftsmanship from the mid-19th century.
The slice was crafted in 1848 in Amsterdam by the well-known silversmith Johannes van Wijk Janszoon (active between 1846 and 1875). The silver blade has a beautiful, flowing contour and is richly decorated with finely hand-engraved scrollwork, floral motifs, and detailed cross-hatching. The silver midsection (the stem) transitions into a beautifully engraved ferrule with stylized floral and leaf motifs. The slice features an authentic, sleek faceted yellow/cream-colored bone handle that sits perfectly in the hand.
The object is fully and clearly hallmarked with official Dutch silver hallmarks:
  • Maker's mark: JvW below the image of a fish (J. van Wijk Jzn)
  • Fineness mark: Walking Lion with a '2' (for 2nd grade silver, .833)
  • Assay office mark: Minerva head with the 'A' for Amsterdam
  • Date letter: O for the year 1848
Specifications:
  • Length: 295 mm (29.5 cm)
  • Weight: 92.1 grams (including handle)
  • Period: Dated 1848 (Early Victorian / Biedermeier)
  • Origin: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
This unique and atmospheric serving utensil is in beautiful antique condition and will be an absolute eye-catcher at a chic dinner party, high tea, or for the serious collector of Amsterdam silverware.
