Are you looking for an exclusive, early 19th-century piece of Amsterdam table silver?
This antique silver cake slice (also perfectly usable as a fish slice) is a rare collector's item of museum quality. The piece was crafted by the Amsterdam master silversmith Johannes van Wijk.
The slice stands out due to its impressive size and refined design from the late Empire / early Biedermeier period. The large, wide silver blade has an elegant, slightly curved tulip shape and features a beautiful ajour (openwork) sawn edge with stylized leaf forms and geometric motifs. The blade transitions via a sturdy, chased silver stem into an authentic, smoothly polished bone handle. This masterpiece is in excellent antique condition with razor-sharp, deeply struck hallmarks on both the blade and the stem.
Features and hallmarks:
  • Product: Large antique silver pastry slice / fish slice
  • Maker's mark: IV above W+ in a square (Johannes van Wijk, active in Amsterdam between 1819 and 1846)
  • Fineness mark: Walking Lion (2nd grade silver, .833)
  • Assay office mark: Minerva head with the 'A' of Amsterdam
  • Handle material: Authentic bone with silver fitting
  • Decoration: Hand-sawn openwork along the edges, palmette/leaf-shaped stem elements
  • Dimensions: Length of no less than 278 mm
  • Weight: 87.3 grams (including handle)
A rare and impressive showpiece for the serious collector of Amsterdam high-quality silver and historical table cutlery. An absolute eye-catcher during a chic dinner or high tea.
