Are you looking for a rare and museum-quality collector's item of Amsterdam antique silver?
This unique and extremely refined silver caddy spoon is a magnificent example of early 19th-century Dutch craftsmanship from the late Empire / early Biedermeier period. The piece was crafted by the Amsterdam master silversmith Johannes Franciscus Smets.
The spoon excels due to its special and charming design: the bowl is shaped like a semicircular coffee or sugar bale with a finely chased ribbed pattern (fluted) on the outside. The sleek, pointed handle fits this beautifully and is adorned with a subtle double thread border along the contours.
This exceptional collector's item dates exactly to the year 1834 and is in beautiful antique condition. On the back of the stem, there are four razor-sharp, deeply struck silver hallmarks.
Features and hallmarks:
  • Product: Antique silver tea scoop / caddy spoon
  • Model: Bowl in the shape of a fluted bale with a sleek thread-pattern handle point
  • Maker's mark: FS above crossed hammers in a square (Johannes Franciscus Smets, active in Amsterdam between 1813 and 1846)
  • Fineness mark: Walking Lion (2nd grade silver, .833)
  • Assay office mark: Minerva head with the 'A' of Amsterdam
  • Date letter: Z (1834)
  • Dimensions: Length of 87 mm (subtle small silver)
  • Weight: 4.1 grams
