Add an extremely rare and early historical masterpiece to your collection of silverware with this magnificent antique silver sugar sifter spoon.
This spoon is an early and magnificent example of Dutch craftsmanship from the early Biedermeier period. What immediately catches the eye is the unique, rectangular bowl with a voluminous, deeply chased gadrooned edge. The center of the bowl features beautiful geometric ajour fretwork in the shape of a sunburst, flanked by finely pierced little stars. The sturdy handle is executed in a monumental, layered parallel or 'fiole' motif that fits perfectly with the rich design language of the early nineteenth century.
This museum-quality piece of silverware is by the hand of the well-known silversmith Huberdina Maria van de Ven, the Widow of Bartholomeus Gillis, who continued the famous Den Bosch silver workshop between 1833 and 1859. Pieces from this early Den Bosch period (marked with office hallmark K) are rare. This example from the year 1839, the absolute heyday of the early Biedermeier, testifies to the fabulous quality and sturdiness for which the Gillis atelier was known. Weighing 39.2 grams, the spoon feels exceptionally solid and balanced.
The sugar sifter spoon is in fantastic antique condition with a deep, warm silver luster. The official Dutch silver hallmarks on the back of the handle and in the rim of the bowl are exceptionally sharp, deep, and clearly struck.
