This antique silver sifter spoon (sugar sifter spoon) is a striking example of 19th-century Frisian silversmithing. The spoon was crafted in 1868 in Sneek by the well-known silversmith Pieter Rintjes Binkes.
Pieter Rintjes Binkes (1816–1896) was a prominent goldsmith and silversmith who was active in Sneek from 1839 until his death in late 1896 (officially registered until 1897). Under the company name 'Fa. P. Binkes', he was known for his high-quality small silver and traditional Frisian spoons. In his work, Binkes often combined casting, such as the typical handle finials, with sleek forging. After his death, the well-known smithy was continued until 1904 by his daughters Nieske Catharina and Hantje Petronella Binkes, after which the business passed into the hands of the Leeuwarden silversmith Tulleners. Silverware with his maker's mark (PB over 135) is a staple area for collectors of historical Frisian silver.

The spoon is characterized by a deep, egg-shaped bowl that has been manually perforated with a pattern of round sifting holes. The handle is slender and terminates in a characteristic finial of a cast and openwork cupid, typical of the Frisian spoon tradition. Directly below this finial is a sleek, triangular connection to the handle.

The spoon is marked with four clear and authentic Dutch silver hallmarks on the back of the handle:
  • Maker's mark: P B above 135 in a square (Pieter Rintjes Binkes, Sneek, active 1839-1897).
  • Fineness stamp: Walking Lion with the number 2 (2nd grade silver, .833).
  • Assay office mark: Minerva head (Assay office Sneek/Leeuwarden).
  • Date letter: The lowercase letter i for the year 1868.
Specifications:
  • Length: 141 mm
  • Weight: 18.1 grams
  • Condition: In good antique condition with a natural patina and light, age-appropriate signs of use. The perforations in the bowl are fully intact and the cast construction at the handle is solid.
