This antique silver sifter spoon (sugar sifter) is a representative example of handmade Amsterdam table silver from the mid-19th century. The spoon was crafted in 1850 by the silversmith Marten van Leeuwen.
Marten van Leeuwen was active as a silversmith and small-ware maker in Amsterdam between 1830 and 1866. He was known for his high-quality utility items and refined metalwork, such as sugar tongs, tea scoops, and sifter spoons. His workshop used a master mark with the initials MVL under the number 97 in a square. Van Leeuwen worked during the heyday of the Dutch Biedermeier style, which is clearly recognizable in the combination of fine fretwork (ajour) and the richly engraved, heavy handles that adorn his silverware. His pieces are popular within the collecting field of 19th-century Amsterdam city silver.
The spoon stands out due to its wide, rectangular bowl with rounded corners and a slightly wavy edge. The inside of the bowl features a fine, manually sawn ajour pattern with a central sun motif (or spoke motif), geometric patterns, and small stars. The edge of the bowl is decorated with a subtle engraving of acanthus leaves and scrollwork. The sturdy stem transitions into a wide, richly decorated handle in Biedermeier style, finished with floral motifs, volutes, and guilloché work.

The spoon bears four clear and authentic Dutch silver hallmarks on the back of the stem and in the bowl:
  • Master mark: 97 above MVL in a square (Marten van Leeuwen, Amsterdam).
  • Fineness stamp: Walking Lion with the number 2 (2nd grade silver, .833).
  • Assay office mark: Minerva head with the letter A (Assay office Amsterdam).
  • Date letter: The ornate letter Q for the year 1850.
Specifications:
  • Length: 160 mm
  • Weight: 48.5 grams
  • Condition: In good antique condition with a natural patina and light, age-appropriate signs of use. The fretwork and engraving are completely intact and the spoon has a substantial weight.
