Are you looking for a special piece of Dutch silverware with a beautiful history?
This elegant antique sugar sifter spoon is a fine example of silverware from the mid-19th century.
The spoon was crafted by the renowned Frisian silversmith Johannes Hendriks Yskamp from Harlingen (active between 1826 and 1844), with the piece being officially hallmarked in 1842 according to the date letter. The silver bowl has a beautifully shaped, diamond-like square form with a finely serrated edge. The center features elegant openwork braiding that radiates from a central floral motif into sunbeams, complemented by pierced slots along the raised edges.
The silver stem is slender and transitions smoothly into a sleek, layered handle. The handle is finished with a refined beaded edge all around.
The object is fully and clearly hallmarked with the official Dutch silver marks:
Maker's mark: I Y above 55 in a square (J. H. Yskamp, Harlingen)
Fineness mark: Walking Lion with a '2' (for 2nd grade silver, .833)
Office mark: Minerva head (office letter illegible)
Date letter: H for 1842
Specifications:
Length: 100 mm (10.0 cm)
Weight: 12 grams (solid silver)
Period: 1842 (Biedermeier)
Origin: Harlingen, Netherlands
This charming sugar sifter spoon is in good antique condition. It makes for an attractive eye-catcher on a beautifully set table during a dinner or high tea, and is a fine addition for the collector of small Frisian silver.
