Are you looking for a unique and refined piece of Dutch tableware?
This brilliant antique silver sifter spoon (or sugar sifter) is a wonderful example of early 19th-century Amsterdam craftsmanship. The spoon was crafted by the renowned silversmith Harmanus Remmers and exudes pure elegance.
Harmanus Remmers (sometimes written as Hermanus Remmers) was a highly skilled silversmith and a so-called 'kleinwerker' (maker of small objects) who was active in Amsterdam from 1812 to approximately 1847. He survived the turbulent French period and the transition to the new Dutch kingdom, and he unfailingly adapted his style to the prevailing fashion. Remmers was known for his eye for detail in refined household objects. His body of work includes luxury corkscrews (often combined with mother-of-pearl), silver spark catchers for stone tobacco pipes, pill boxes, and refined serving pieces such as tea scoops and sugar spoons. His maker's mark, a slanted anchor above the letters R S in a square, guarantees pure Amsterdam craftsmanship from the early 19th century.

The spoon immediately stands out due to its richly openwork rectangular bowl with rounded corners. The precisely sawn and punched openwork pattern is decorated with geometric motifs and graceful little stars. The serrated and scalloped edge around the bowl gives the piece a dynamic and luxurious look. The stem flows into a beautifully shaped handle in the form of a stylized feather or leaf motif, which feels great in the hand and shines beautifully.

The back of the stem and the bowl of the spoon bear clear, authentic Dutch silver hallmarks:
  • Maker's mark:  Anchor above R S in square (Harmanus Remmers, Amsterdam, active c. 1812-1847).
  • Fineness stamp: Walking Lion with the 2 (2nd grade silver, .833).
  • Office mark: Minerva head with the letter A (Assay Office Amsterdam).
  • Date letter: The graceful F for the year 1840.
Specifications:
  • Length: 154 mm
  • Weight: 21.1 grams
  • Condition: In excellent antique condition with a beautiful patina and minimal signs of wear consistent with age. The openwork is completely intact.
A brilliant collector's item for the lover of Amsterdam silver, perfect for use at a high tea or as an exclusive showpiece in the display cabinet!
