This antique silver sifter spoon (sugar sifter spoon) is a representative example of 19th-century Amsterdam table silver. The spoon was crafted in 1843 by the renowned Amsterdam silversmith Hendrik Albert Schuss and combines a solid weight with detailed craftsmanship.
Hendrik Albert Schuss was active as a silversmith in Amsterdam between 1826 and 1867. Within the silversmithing trade, he was primarily known as a 'small-ware maker' (kleinwerker). This meant he specialized in finer utility items and hollowware, such as sugar tongs, scent boxes, tea scoops, cream spoons, and sifter spoons. His silverware is characterized by solid construction, which is also evident in the substantial weight of this sifter spoon (over 60 grams). Throughout his career, Schuss used a maker's mark featuring a slanted anchor above his initials H A S, a recognizable hallmark for collectors of early Victorian and Biedermeier Amsterdam silver.
The spoon has a rectangular bowl with a wavy, contour-following edge. The inside and walls of the bowl feature a fretwork pattern, hand-sawn into geometric shapes and stylized four-leaf floral motifs. The stem and handle are executed in a classic, smooth model with subtle ribbon edging (undulating model), which provides a calm balance to the ornate bowl.
The spoon is marked with four clear and authentic Dutch silver hallmarks on the back of the stem and in the bowl:

  • Maker's mark: Slanted anchor above the letters H A S in a square (Hendrik Albert Schuss, Amsterdam).
  • Fineness mark: Walking Lion with the number 2 (2nd standard silver, .833).
  • Assay office mark: Minerva head with the letter A (Amsterdam Assay Office).
  • Date letter: The I for the year 1843.
Specifications:
  • Length: 165 mm
  • Weight: 60.1 grams
  • Condition: In good antique condition with a natural patina and light signs of use consistent with age. The fretwork is fully intact and the construction is sturdy.
