This antique silver sifter spoon (sugar sifter spoon) is a characteristic example of mid-19th century Dutch silversmithing. The spoon was crafted in 1857 in the renowned silver city of Schoonhoven by silversmith Cornelis van Gelderen Pieterzoon.
Cornelis van Gelderen Pieterzoon was an active silversmith in Schoonhoven during the period 1840 to 1873. He is registered under maker's mark G67 and was part of the community of Schoonhoven small-ware smiths. During this period, Schoonhoven, historically known as the 'Silver City', specialized strongly in the production of fine silverware such as serving pieces, snuff boxes, and clothing accessories. The work of Van Gelderen Pzn from this specific Biedermeier period is characterized by the combination of traditional openwork (ajour) techniques with the then-fashionable, finely engraved scroll and floral motifs on the handle.
The spoon has a round, deep bowl with a scalloped and slightly raised edge. The inside of the bowl features a fine, manually sawn openwork pattern in the form of diamond and ray motifs. The stem transitions into a wide, richly decorated handle. This handle is finished with fine engraving featuring floral motifs, scrollwork (volutes), and a central, unengraved cartouche.

Fully hallmarked
The piece is marked with four clear and authentic Dutch silver hallmarks on the back of the stem:
  • Maker's mark: G67 in a rectangle (Cornelis van Gelderen Pieterzoon, Schoonhoven, active 1840-1873).
  • Fineness mark: Walking Lion with the 2 (2nd grade silver, .833).
  • Assay office mark: Minerva head with the letter M (Schoonhoven assay office).
  • Year letter: The X for the year 1857.
Specifications:
  • Length: 158 mm
  • Weight: 25.2 grams
  • Condition: In good antique condition with a natural patina and light, age-appropriate signs of use. The sawing and engraving are completely intact, and the construction is solid.
