Silver ornamental spoon, VOC ship, C. Rietveld, Schoonhoven, 1909

The spoon stands out immediately due to its substantial size (nearly 20 centimeters) and the detailed, cast finial on the stem: a magnificent three-masted V.O.C. ship (East Indiaman) with full sails, fluttering flags, and a detailed bow and stern. The stem itself is fashioned as an openwork scroll with floral motifs and leaves, resting on an elegantly cast female figure (caryatid) just above the junction of the bowl. The oval bowl is left completely plain and smooth, providing a beautiful contrast to the ornate stem.
For the connoisseur, the inside of the spoon bowl is a true feast of documentation. The spoon was hallmarked around the turn of the century for the international trade market and contains the following razor-sharp stamps:
- Dutch hallmarks: The Dutch Lion (1) for first-standard silver (.925 sterling) with the export key, the Minerva head with the letter 'M' (assay office Schoonhoven), and the date letter 'Z' for the year 1909.
- Silversmith: The maker's mark 'R over 133 in a square', the registered mark of master silversmith Cornelis Rietveld (active in Schoonhoven between 1865 and 1912).
- British import hallmarks: The importer's mark 'B.M.L' of the famous merchant Benjamin Maurice Landeck, together with the official British import marks for the city of Chester, the fineness mark '.925', and the corresponding British date letter 'H' (Chester, 1908/1909).
- Silversmith: Cornelis Rietveld, Schoonhoven (active 1865-1912)
- Dating: 1909 (Dutch date letter Z) / 1908-1909 (British import)
- Importer: B.M. Landeck, Chester / London (B.M.L)
- Hallmarks: Fully hallmarked with Lion 1 + key, Minerva head M, date letter Z (1909), Rietveld maker's mark, plus full Chester import stamps (.925, BML, date letter H).
- Decoration: Cast finial in the shape of a V.O.C. ship, openwork stem with caryatid
- Length: 198 mm (very substantial specimen)
- Weight: 57.8 grams (heavy, solid quality)
- Condition: In exceptionally beautiful, display-worthy condition. All details of the ship and the hallmarks have been preserved in razor-sharp condition.
