The spoon is immediately distinguished by the unique, cast finial on the stem: a detailed figure of a craftsman (rope maker or spinner) working intently at a large wheel. This type of spoon featuring a specific guild or occupational symbol is significantly rarer on the antiques market than common spoons depicting ships or allegorical figures. It was likely a prestigious presentation piece or anniversary gift within a specific trade guild.
The back of the spoon bowl contains a fascinating riddle for the connoisseur. The hallmarks have been struck with great force:
- Pseudo-marks: The spoon features distinct pseudo-hallmarks (including a sharp, Gothic or crowned letter 'A' in a shield). This type of historical neo-hallmark was consciously used by 19th-century silversmiths to give the object the allure and character of rare 18th-century guild silver.
- Silversmith: Unidentified (maker's mark with recumbent fish / symbols)
- Region of origin: Northern Netherlands (Presumably Groningen or Schoonhoven)
- Dating: c. 1890 (Historicism)
- Hallmarks: Unidentified maker's mark and a sharp pseudo-mark (letter A)
- Decoration: Cast finial with a craftsman figure at a wheel, twisted and openwork stem
- Length: 174 mm
- Weight: 54.9 grams (nicely heavy and solid specimen)
- Condition: In excellent, authentic condition. The silver has a deep, soft luster and all details of the wheel and the hallmarks have been preserved razor-sharp.
