Silver decorative spoon with sailing ship, C. Rietveld, Schoonhoven, 1894

The spoon is immediately striking due to its substantial size (over 21 centimeters) and its impressive weight of no less than 70.5 grams. The handle is crowned by a beautifully open-cast, detailed sailing ship (three-master) sailing on waves within an ornate wreath surmounted by a crown.
The back of the spoon bowl forms crystal-clear historical documentation. Around the turn of the century, this spoon was specifically hallmarked for the international trade market with the following razor-sharp stamps:
- Dutch hallmarks: The Dutch Lion (1) for first-grade silver (.925) with the export key, the Minerva head with the letter 'M' (assay office Schoonhoven), and the date letter 'K' for the year 1894.
- Silversmith: The official maker's mark 'R above 133 in a square' of master silversmith Cornelis Rietveld (active in Schoonhoven between 1865 and 1912).
- British import hallmarks: The importer's mark 'B.H.J' of the prominent firm B.H. Joseph & Co from Birmingham and London (Barnet Henry Joseph, registered as a well-known importer of early Dutch silver works). Together with the London import assay mark and the British date letter 'S' for the year 1893/1894.
- Silversmith: Cornelis Rietveld, Schoonhoven (active 1865-1912)
- Dating: 1894 (Dutch date letter K) / 1893-1894 (British import)
- Importer: B.H. Joseph & Co, London / Birmingham (B.H.J)
- Hallmarks: Fully hallmarked with Lion 1 + key, Minerva head M, date letter K, Rietveld maker's mark, plus full London import stamps (BHJ, date letter S).
- Decoration: Cast finial in the shape of a sailing ship in a crowned wreath, openwork stem with lion's head
- Length: 213 mm (very large and imposing specimen)
- Weight: 70.5 grams (heavy, solid quality)
- Condition: In excellent, showcase-worthy condition. All finely detailed elements of the ship and the hallmarks are perfectly preserved.
