Silver ornamental spoon with coat of arms, A. de Groot-Boersma, Sneek, 1901

Frisian ornamental spoon with a windmill as finial, made by the silversmith Ate de Groot-Boersma from Sneek. This silversmith was active from 1875 to 1909.

The spoon features a family crest in the bowl.

The ornamental spoon is marked with various hallmarks. The maker's mark AB34, first grade mark with export key, Minerva head, and year letter R for 1901.

The spoon was exported to Great Britain at the time. Upon arrival in England, it was legally required for foreign silver to be re-hallmarked at an English assay office to verify that it met their sterling standard (.925).

Therefore, the spoon also features English hallmarks: S.B.L: This is the registered maker's mark/sponsor's mark of Samuel Boyce Landeck. He was one of the most important and well-known London importers of fine continental silver (especially Dutch and Hanau silver) between 1891 and 1907. F in a horizontal oval: This is the special foreign import year letter for London. In this specific oval cartouche, the letter F precisely denotes the year 1901. Also, the city mark for London and the first grade mark.
