This large, first-grade silver commemorative spoon was crafted in 1901 by the renowned silversmith Petrus Adrianus van der Beek. The spoon is a prime example of top-tier Dutch quality intended for the demanding British market at the turn of the century, featuring an exceptionally complete set of Dutch and London hallmarks.

With a substantial length of 187 mm and a heavy weight of 62.9 grams, this spoon has a solid feel in the hand. The stem is crowned by an extremely detailed cast historical sailing ship (three-masted) sailing over waves with full sails, mounted within an elegantly pierced wreath.
The stem itself features a twisted vine motif and transitions into an intricately cast mask directly above the bowl of the spoon.

The back of the bowl and the details on the stem display a rarely complete and razor-sharp set of hallmarks from the year 1901:
  • Dutch hallmarks: The Dutch Lion (1) for first-grade silver (.925 sterling) with the export key, the Minerva head with the letter 'M' (assay office Schoonhoven), and the date letter 'R' for the year 1901. A heraldic repetition stamp (crowned lion in a shield) is also struck on the bowl.
  • Silversmith: The maker's mark 'P van der B above a compass in a square' of Petrus Adrianus van der Beek (active in Workum, Franeker, and The Hague between 1854 and 1909). Additionally, there is an extra maker's mark stamp on the stem.
  • British import hallmarks: The importer's mark 'S.B.L' of the well-known importer Samuel Boyce Landeck, the official London import stamps (lion passant, import sign), the fineness mark .925, and the British date letter 'f' for 1901. Even the sails of the ship are marked with the small, circular Minerva head.
