With an impressive length of 207 mm, this is a very substantial piece. The handle is crowned by a beautifully and detailed cast three-masted sailing ship that sails across turbulent waves with billowing sails.
The decorative spoon features sharp and complete hallmarks:
- Dutch hallmarks: The Dutch Lion (1) in a hexagon for first-standard silver (.925 sterling) with the export key, the Minerva head with the office letter 'M' (assay office Schoonhoven), and the razor-sharp date letter 'Q' for the year 1900.
- Silversmith: The specific casting and construction point unmistakably towards the well-known specialist in decorative spoons Cornelis Rietveld (active in Schoonhoven between 1865 and 1912).
- British import hallmarks: The importer's mark 'S.B.L' in a rectangle belonging to the renowned international silver dealer Samuel Boyce Landeck, the official British import marks (the crowned lion passant and the scales) for the assay office in Sheffield, the fineness mark .925, and the corresponding British date letter 'h' for the year 1900/1901.
- Silversmith: Cornelis Rietveld (attributed), Schoonhoven (active 1865-1912)
- Date: 1900 (Both Dutch date letter Q and British date letter h)
- Importer: S.B. Landeck, Sheffield / London (S.B.L)
- Hallmarks: Fully hallmarked with Lion 1 + key, Minerva head M, date letter Q (1900), plus full Sheffield import stamps (.925, SBL, date letter h) and customs stamp on the sail.
- Decoration: Cast finial with sailing ship on waves, openwork handle with lion mask
- Length: 207 mm (substantial piece)
- Weight: 78.1 grams
- Condition: In exceptionally beautiful, display-worthy condition. All finely detailed elements of the ship and the extensive series of hallmarks are sharply preserved.
