Silver ornamental spoon with a detailed horse's hoof.

The hoof spoon, formerly also called a "peerdevoetenlepel", was most likely made in Friesland around 1660. Probably outside the city, as it is not hallmarked.

The spoon features a rattail joint between the handle and the bowl, characteristic of that period.

The spoon was once gilded, but this has worn off over time.

The only hallmark on this spoon is the tax mark V (1814-1893).

For a similar example, see: Klijn, Eet- en sierlepels in Nederland, page 99, and also the book Nederlands Klein Zilver by Wttewaall, page 292, illustration 885, Hoof spoons type N.

The spoon is in good condition.

Weight: 40.2 grams. Dimensions: 4.7 x 17 cm.
