An extremely intriguing and rare collector's item for connoisseurs of historical silver and maker's mark mysteries.
This robust silver ornamental spoon, crafted around 1890, is an exceptionally high-quality example of historicism silver that deliberately sought to merge historical North Dutch stylistic elements and old guild hallmarks.

The design of this spoon attempted to imitate the iconic and refined silver style from Enkhuizen. The slender, wavy stem culminates in a beautifully cast and openwork finial depicting the symbolic figure 'Charity' (Caritas), classically portrayed as a mother figure holding a child and flanked by two standing children. The transition from the stem to the generous, deep bowl is adorned with a richly elaborated ornamental finial with an expressive mask/cherub face.

What makes this spoon truly fascinating for serious collectors is the mark applied to the reverse:
  • Maker's Mark: A letter T in an upright oval.
  • Historical Background: Although the spoon was made around 1890 (and the true maker has not yet been definitively identified, presumably Friesland), this specific mark is a clever imitation of the rare late 17th-century maker's mark of the famous silversmith Pieter Jacobs Clinckhamer. The spoon bears no additional hallmarks, which is entirely consistent with the mystique surrounding such high-quality collector's pieces from the historicism period.
Specifications:
  • Material: Silver
  • Maker / Origin: Not identified (historicism, presumably Friesland)
  • Dating: Circa 1890 (with a nod to the late 17th century and the Enkhuizen style)
  • Maker's Mark: Letter T in an upright oval (imitation mark P.J. Clinckhamer)
  • Weight: 57.0 grams (very heavy, solid quality)
  • Length: 19.2 cm (192 mm)
  • Condition: Excellent antique condition. The silver has a beautifully polished surface with a deep, dark patina in the details of the casting and the maker's mark, showcasing the relief wonderfully.
A magnificent showpiece for display and a great conversation starter for enthusiasts of pseudo-marks, historicism silver, and Frisian and West Frisian silver history.
