This first-grade silver commemorative spoon from the year 1902 was crafted by the highly esteemed Schoonhoven silversmith Cornelis Rietveld. The spoon tells the fascinating story of high-quality Dutch silver exports to Great Britain at the beginning of the 20th century and features a crystal-clear, double set of hallmarks.

With a substantial length of 18.4 cm and a solid weight of 63.7 grams, this is a heavy, high-quality spoon. The handle is crowned by a beautifully cast, three-dimensional figure of a Cavalier / Musketeer in historic 17th-century attire, complete with a wide-brimmed hat, sash, and boots, standing jauntily with one hand on his hip.
The stem itself is executed in a robust, openwork, and twisted vine motif that blends with floral details into an expressively cast mask (lion's head) directly above the base of the spoon bowl.

The bowl, the handle, and the base of the figure show a fabulously sharp and complete set of documentation:
  • Dutch hallmarks: The Dutch Lion (1) in a hexagon for first-grade silver (.925 sterling) with the export key, the Minerva head with the office letter 'M' (assay office Schoonhoven), and the date letter 'S' for the year 1902.
  • Silversmith: The official and razor-sharp struck maker's mark 'R above 133 in a square' of master silversmith Cornelis Rietveld (active in Schoonhoven between 1865 and 1912). An additional silver stamp is also found on the twisted handle.
  • British import hallmarks: The highly sought-after importer's mark 'I M' of the well-known London silver importer Ephraim Isidor Miller, the official London import marks (the lion passant and the import sign), the purity mark .925, and the British date letter 'g' for the year 1902. Even the underside of the musketeer's base features the small, round British customs import stamp (Minerva head).
