An exceptionally robust and richly decorated silver ornamental spoon, crafted around 1900 in the distinctive Groningen style.

The spoon's stem is designed as a richly decorated, flat, sleek handle with side knobs and fine relief work. The finial features a highly detailed, cast symbolic figure of an artisan brewer with a stirring paddle in his hands, standing by a brewing vat and a beer barrel.
An absolute eye-catcher is the generous, egg-shaped bowl: its interior is adorned with a beautiful, deep gold plating (vermeil). The warm golden glow creates a stunning contrast with the gleaming silver and the deep-set dark patina lines in the stem and the attachment (featuring an expressive mask/angel's head).

The back of the spoon's bowl clearly displays two specific historical imitation hallmarks:
  • Pseudo-hallmarks: Two so-called Groningen pseudo-hallmarks, including a crowned letter 'G' and a shield with the number '2' above a letter 'P'. These marks were used around 1900 by skilled silversmiths to imitate the historical atmosphere of the old city hallmarks.
  • Maker: Although the spoon does not bear an official master's mark, this specific type of high-quality historicist spoon with Groningen pseudo-hallmarks and heavy cast quality is attributed with great certainty to the renowned Gebroeders Roelfsma from Winsum (active around 1900).
