Andries Vis was a highly respected and skilled master silversmith who was registered in 1741 with the prestigious Amsterdam silversmiths' guild. He established himself as an independent master and worked throughout his long, successful career from his workshops on the Anjelierstraat and later the Egelantiersgracht. Vis worked during a period when the Amsterdam elite had an enormous demand for refined silverware in the fashionable Louis XIV and XV style (Rococo). Within the guild, he was known as an excellent maker of flatware with a fabulous eye for detail. Pieces by his hand are cherished today in museum collections (such as the Amsterdam Museum).
The handle of the spoon is beautifully cast in an openwork, twisted, baroque scroll motif. The handle is crowned by a highly detailed allegorical representation of 'Peace'. This graceful female figure traditionally holds an olive branch up in one hand and a palm branch in the other. The back of the deep, oval bowl shows a crisp and authentic hand-engraved owner's monogram with the letters 'B / D.M', which gives this historical collector's item an extra personal character.
What makes this specimen extra valuable for collectors is the exceptionally sharp and complete set of Amsterdam guild hallmarks on the back of the bowl:
- The sought-after maker's mark of a fish swimming to the left in a horizontal oval, the canting mark of master silversmith Andries Vis.
-
The official city coat of arms of Amsterdam (those three St. Andrew's crosses under a crown).
- The date letter 'R', which specifically stands for the year 1751.
- Silversmith: Andries Vis, Amsterdam (1722-1799, master in 1741)
- Place of origin: Amsterdam, the Netherlands
- Dating: 1751 (18th century / Baroque)
- Hallmarks: Maker's mark (swimming fish), Amsterdam city coat of arms, guild lion & date letter R (1751)

- Length: 173 mm
