Silver Louis XV dish made from a pipe brazier. The pipe brazier was made by the silversmith Severijn Schiff from Nijmegen. He was born in 1725 in Nijmegen and died in 1802.
In 1778, he purchased the Kalverdans building on the Kannenmarkt, where he and his son Adrianus Hendrikus, who also worked as a silversmith, ran the business. In 1787, he became a leaseholder for the Maas en Waal Silversmiths' Office. In 1770, he was named, along with Peter Scheers, as responsible for the charter. He was also the silversmiths' office's bookkeeper from 1781 to 1786.
The pipe brazier is hallmarked with the Nijmegen city hallmark N, the master's mark SS under the crown, the date letter Y for 1788/1789, and the Nijmegen city hallmark eagle. In the 18th century, all pieces were hallmarked with the two city hallmarks or lacked them entirely. (Source: Nijmegen Silver 1400-1900, p. 21).
Finally, the stove is equipped with a test strip to check the silver content.
