Beautifully decorated silver Biedermeier vegetable spoon made by the Amsterdam silversmith H.A. Schuss, active from 1826 to 1867.

Hendrik Arnoldus Schuss was a prominent Amsterdam master silversmith active in the mid-19th century. His workshop played an important role in the production of high-quality Dutch serving pieces and table silver.

His early work (1830s) often featured a more austere design (such as the well-known Rond Filet), but his later work (1840s-1860s) was characterized by exuberant, hand-engraved decorations with floral motifs, scrollwork, and leaf volutes.

The spoon bears the fully struck name stamp of G. Verschuur. The Verschuur family (including father Wouterus and sons Gerard and Hendrik Johannes) was a very well-known family of silversmiths and pawnbrokers/shopkeepers on the Leliegracht in Amsterdam. At the time, shopkeepers often stamped their own name into the silver they purchased from independent top artisans to sell in their own luxury stores.

The spoon is hallmarked with the second standard mark, year letter L for 1845, Minerva head, and master's mark HAS under an anchor.

On the handle of the spoon is a Crown, with an elegant, delicate script letter R engraved beneath it.

Given the origin of the silver (manufactured in Amsterdam in 1845), this spoon originally belonged to a prominent Dutch noble family whose surname began with an R, such as the barons Van Raden, Rengers, Reede, or Röell. This type of personalized noble silver (often referred to as 'bijeengebracht bezit' or 'collected possessions') was ordered in large sets at the time for formal dinners in country houses and castles. This gives this sauce spoon fantastic historical and museum value!

The spoon is in good condition.

Weight: 50.7 grams. Length: 17 cm.
