Silver punch ladle, attributed to Gerrit Greup from Schoonhoven. Active from 1864 to 1888.

Gerrit Greup, later known as Gerrit Regtdoorzee Greup. The Greup family was a very prominent and influential dynasty of gold and silversmiths in the Silver City of Schoonhoven.

The year 1875 falls within the Biedermeier and early Romantic period of Dutch silverware. This explains the ornate details on the punch ladle. The bowl is crafted in an elegant, chased shell shape. This organic motif was highly popular in the 19th century for punch, bowl, and sugar sifter spoons because it perfectly matched the fluid lines of table silver.

The handle has the typical bent, ergonomic shape characteristic of a punch ladle, designed to easily scoop liquid from a deep bowl or punch bowl. Halfway down the handle, an elegantly engraved medallion (cartouche) is visible, framed with refined engraving.

The handle ends in an elegantly curled and flared grip, also featuring fine engraving. This not only provided a good grip but also gave the ladle its luxurious appearance.

The ladle is marked with a difficult-to-read maker's mark, but we believe we can identify G109. Year letter q for 1875, Minerva head M for Schoonhoven, and the second-grade mark.

The ladle is in good condition.

Weight: 45.1 grams. Dimensions: 9 x 21 cm.
