A splendid and museum-quality piece of Dutch silverware for the connoisseur or passionate collector.
This antique silver berry spoon (also known as a compote spoon or strawberry spoon) is a prime example of pure craftsmanship from the mid-19th century.
The spoon immediately stands out due to its scalloped bowl. The center of the bowl is intricately pierced with elegant scrolls and fine engravings, allowing excess fruit juice to drain perfectly. The transition from the bowl to the handle is beautifully accented with a cast ornament in the shape of acanthus leaves, flowing into a richly decorated handle. An absolute masterpiece from the Dutch Biedermeier period.
What makes this piece extra special is the sublime condition of the hallmarks on the back, including the rare retailer's mark of the renowned historical firm Benten & Zoonen from Amsterdam.
About the silversmith: Johannes Jacobus Torlau
This berry spoon was forged by the Amsterdam goldsmith and silversmith Johannes Jacobus Torlau, who was active in the capital between 1858 and 1873. Torlau was known for his high-quality spoon work and table silver in Biedermeier style. Because his active working period was relatively short (only 15 years), surviving pieces from his hand, especially in such immaculate condition, are very scarce.
