Silver miniature chair, A.F. Westerwaal, Amsterdam, ca. 1910

Silver miniature of a chair, made by the silversmith A.F. Westerwaal from Amsterdam. He was active from 1900-1921.

Westerwaal was known for his detailed silver dollhouse items and miniatures of everyday objects, vehicles, and furniture (such as high chairs, dog carts, coaches, and birdcages).

This is a three-legged corner chair, also known as a peasant chair or knob chair. The chair has a characteristic T-shaped backrest. The seat has a triangular shape that is finely cast or engraved to simulate traditional rush braiding (wickerwork).

As the name suggests, this chair, with its three legs and triangular seat, was specifically designed to be placed snugly in the corner of a room. This way, it took up hardly any space when not in use.

Since the Dutch Golden Age, wealthy Dutch ladies collected silver furniture miniatures for their precious cabinet dollhouses. Silversmiths therefore made meticulous replicas of the furniture found in real homes. Westerwaal continued this tradition in the early 20th century with this historic model.

The miniature is marked with master's mark A3W and the 'sword' mark for at least 2nd grade silver.

The miniature is in good condition.
