Are you a lover of technically refined dollhouse silver and looking for a distinctive showpiece for your collection?
This detailed antique silver miniature of a traditional spinning wheel is a magnificent masterpiece of Frisian silversmithing from the first half of the twentieth century.
The miniature was handcrafted by the renowned Sneek silversmith J.S. Zwanenburg (active between 1900 and 1953). Among silversmiths, a spinning wheel is considered one of the most complex miniatures to create due to its many separate, finely engineered parts. This piece is a sublime example of this, excelling in realism:
  • The Spindle Mechanism: The large wheel is decorated with a beautifully chased rim pattern of floral and heart motifs. The wheel is connected to the spindle and bobbin via a twisted silver wire (the drive belt).
  • The Treadle Mechanism: At the bottom is the functional treadle plate, connected to the crankshaft of the wheel by a fine, twisted silver rod.
  • The Frame: The entire piece rests on a V-shaped base plate with three elegantly fluted legs that perfectly mimic the look of antique turned wood.
Weighing an impressive 26.2 grams, this miniature feels surprisingly solid and high-quality for its delicate size.

On the underside of the base plate are two exceptionally sharp, deeply struck Dutch silver hallmarks that guarantee its absolute authenticity (see detail photo):
  • Maker's Mark JZ2: The official factory stamp of J.S. Zwanenburg in the characteristic recumbent hexagon.
  • Dutch Sword Mark: The official assay mark for second-grade silver (.835).
