A beautiful and highly detailed collector's item: this antique silver miniature suitcase. This rare cabinet piece is designed as a nostalgic travel suitcase from the early 20th century, richly decorated with iconic relief hotel and travel stickers. A magnificent example of fine silversmithing that will immediately capture the imagination of any collector of antique small silver or miniatures.
The miniature suitcase is finished by hand on all sides and has a beautiful, lived-in texture. Adding extra charm to this object are the detailed suitcase straps, corner protectors, and the engraved labels of historic world cities such as Monaco, Rome, London, Paris, Tokyo, Bonn, Madrid, and New York. Thanks to the integrated hinge mechanism, the suitcase can be opened and closed smoothly. With a surprisingly solid weight of 22.2 grams for its compact size, this small silver work of art feels wonderfully substantial.
In the late 19th and early 20th century (the heyday of the Grand Tour and the rise of luxury train and boat travel), it was a great tradition among the upper class to collect silver miniatures as souvenirs of travels made. Small suitcases like this one, often featuring the names of great metropolises, were kept in special printer's trays or display cabinets. The fact that Bonn is listed on this suitcase as one of the prominent cities points to a manufacture or theme from the period when Bonn served as the post-war capital of West Germany, giving this object an extra fascinating layer of history.
On the inside of the lid, the miniature features two clear, deeply struck hallmarks:
  • The official fineness mark 925 for sterling silver (first grade silver, consisting of at least 92.5% pure silver)
  • A registered maker's mark (a triangular symbol with a central letter/character)
