Silver miniature of a man with a kite, made by the silversmith Hedde Buijs. He worked successively in Hoorn, Edam, Purmerend, Schoonhoven, and Dordrecht.

He used this maker's mark from 1861 to 1867 while working in Dordrecht.

Hedde Buijs (often also written as Hidde or Hedda in official documents) was a Dutch gold- and silversmith active in the first half of the 19th century (circa 1826–1867). He is a fascinating figure within the antique world due to his specific specialization and his somewhat mysterious, itinerant lifestyle.

In the 19th century, many silversmiths worked in the same city their entire lives. Hedde Buijs deviated from this. He is registered in the archives of various North Holland and South Holland cities:

Edam & Purmerend: This was the foundation of his career. He married in Edam and had children there.

Hoorn: He also lived and worked in this West Frisian city for a period.

Schoonhoven: In this renowned Dutch 'Silver City,' he was registered as a gold- and silversmith's apprentice and die cutter.

Dordrecht:

When his wife passed away in 1856, Hidde left in 1857 with his three children for Dordrecht to work for the silversmith Willem Freen.
His son Pieter Buijs worked as an apprentice for a silversmith in Schoonhoven (F.T. Verroen). When he started his own business on 30-12-1857 (until 17-5-1858), the situation was so tight that he didn't even have a proper workshop. Due to his financial circumstances, he therefore became an apprentice again with silversmith Willem Freen in Dordrecht, where his father was already working.
Hidde later, around 1861, registered a new maker's mark; he lived and worked in Dordrecht. This miniature is marked with this maker's mark. A B with a Maltese cross.
The silver miniature is a miniature figure on an engraved base plate, flying a kite attached to a long, twisted silver wire.

The silver is hallmarked with the tax mark dolphin and the maker's mark B with a Maltese cross.

In good condition.
