Silver miniature spittoon, W. van Strant, Amsterdam, ca. 1730

Silver miniature spittoon made by the silversmith Willem van Strant from Amsterdam. He was active from 1727 to 1742.

He was known as a small-scale worker, particularly in the production of miniature silver.

The spittoon has been approved with the Amsterdam city mark and the VS master mark.

A spittoon is another name for a spitting pot, intended to spit out saliva and mucus released when chewing tobacco.

Dating: ca. 1730.
