Silver miniature made by the silversmith R. Scheltens from Groningen. He was active from 1858 to 1889.

This is a mechanical miniature consisting of a rectangular, decorated base plate with an openwork frame. On top of the frame sits a small bird (often a rooster or dove).

It belongs to the 'toys' category. Originally, a string or thread was wound around the central axis. By turning the large wings, one could wind up or release the string (similar to a pulley or winch).

During the 19th century, there was enormous demand among collectors for 'historic silver' from the Golden Age and the 18th century. Silversmiths like Scheltens used the old molds of 18th-century Amsterdam masters to recast and release these popular miniatures as quality replicas or collector's items.

The miniature is marked with the master's mark RS2 and the tax mark dolphin.

In good condition.

Weight: 29.4 grams. Dimensions: 3.5 x 5 x 6 cm.
