A silver commemorative spoon made by silversmith Willem Johannes de Roos from Dokkum. He became a master in 1763 and worked until 1792.

The spoon is typically Frisian and features the symbol of Hope: a dove and an anchor. The dove refers to Noah, Genesis 8-11; the anchor refers to Hebrews 6, about "hope as an anchor of the soul."

The silversmith uses a rose as a symbol. He was born around 1719 and died on May 8, 1797. In 1771, he became mayor of Dokkum. You can find more information about him in the book (catalog). Dokkumer, Kollumer and Amelander silver edited by Janjaap Luijt (2002), p. 281.

In the 1974 issue of the Frisian Voet, you'll find him under number 139. He doesn't appear in the old Voet from 1932. This isn't surprising, as little of his work is known. Perhaps he had other, time-consuming pursuits besides silversmithing.
The spoon bears the initials W J.

The spoon is in good condition.

Weight: 49.6 grams. Length: 16.5 cm.
