This characteristic silver commemorative spoon was crafted in the mid-19th century by the renowned Hague silversmith Petrus Adrianus van der Beek.
The spoon combines detailed casting with a rich set of official and historical hallmarks.

The stem of the spoon is executed as an elegant, twisted handle crowned by a cast allegorical depiction of Charity (Caritas). The female figure is surrounded by two children, symbolizing motherly love, care, and affection. This has traditionally made the spoon a popular and symbolic wedding or christening gift.
The reverse of the smooth, egg-shaped bowl is engraved with a clean, hand-cut owner's monogram featuring the graceful letters 'L G'.

The spoon is very interestingly and clearly hallmarked on the back. In addition to the official Dutch re-assay mark, the Dolphin for domestic silver tax, the spoon contains four striking historical marks:
  • The maker's mark 'V an D B' above a compass in a rectangle of Petrus Adrianus van der Beek (active in The Hague between 1854 and 1880).
  • Three so-called pseudo-marks (including a crowned 'A' and a heraldic lion in a shield). In the 19th century, it was common for silversmiths working in these revival styles to imitate older 17th- and 18th-century marks to give the object a historical, antique character.
