An exceptionally charming, heavy, and internationally hallmarked silver ornamental spoon from 1897, crafted in the silver city of Schoonhoven.
This impressive spoon combines the romantic Neo-Renaissance style with a fascinating export history to the United Kingdom. A magnificent piece for the serious collector.

The stem of this spoon is a work of art in itself, crowned by a very detailed cast and openwork symbolic figure of Cupid (Amor) with bow and arrow. The twisted braid stem is richly decorated at the base with floral garlands and leaf motifs. The transition to the sleek, plain (smooth) spoon bowl is formed by an expressively cast mask/angel head, which gives the spoon its typical historical guild appearance.

The inside of the spoon bowl and the back of the stem show an exceptionally complete and razor-sharp collection of both Dutch and British silver hallmarks:
  • Dutch Hallmarks (Schoonhoven, 1897): Hallmarked with the Running Lion with a 1 (1st grade silver, .925 sterling silver – required for the English market), a Minerva head with office letter M (Schoonhoven), and the Dutch year letter M for the production year 1897.
  • Pseudo Marks: The back of the bowl features four historical pseudo marks (fantasy hallmarks) to give the spoon the character of old guild silver.
  • British Importer (S.B. Landeck, London): Featuring the official importer's mark S.B.L of the well-known London importer Samuel Boyce Landeck.
  • London Import Hallmarks: The spoon bears the full British import hallmarks (here struck with the London year letter 'd' for 1899, including the 'Lion Passant' for sterling silver and the assay office mark.
Specifications:
  • Material: 1st grade silver (.925 Sterling Silver)
  • Place of origin: Schoonhoven (Netherlands) & imported in London (UK)
  • Date: 1897 (London import hallmarks around 1896/1897)
  • Importer: S.B. Landeck, London (S.B.L)
  • Weight: 59.5 grams (remarkably heavy, solid quality)
  • Length: 17.4 cm (174 mm)
  • Condition: In absolute top condition. Beautifully clearly polished with a sublime high-contrast shadow patina in the wings of Cupid, the mask, and the razor-sharp hallmarks.
A magnificent showpiece that, due to its romantic Cupid motif, heavy weight, and dual Dutch-English hallmarking, is an absolute asset for collectors of maritime, historical, or exported Dutch silver.
