An exceptionally beautiful, large, and historically interesting North-Dutch silver ornamental spoon, made in 1867 by the renowned Groningen silversmith Anthonie Kornelis Sieman.
This beautifully decorated masterpiece is a fantastic example of 19th-century craftsmanship with a beloved agrarian motif.

The spoon immediately stands out with its very detailed cast and openworked finial at the end of the handle: a milkmaid kneeling and milking a cow. This quintessential Dutch and atmospheric artisanal scene is beautifully and sharply detailed on both sides.
The richly decorated handle is adorned with floral garlands, leaf motifs, and a central flower bud. The transition to the generous, egg-shaped bowl is formed by a very expressive and impressively cast lion's head with a full mane, giving the spoon a powerful and exclusive appearance.

The spoon is remarkably complete, sharp, and unmistakably hallmarked with the official Dutch silver hallmarks:
  • Maker's Mark: The letter S within a compass/circle in a square, the official mark of A.K. Sieman (active in Groningen between 1844 and 1868). Struck very sharply directly below the casting of the cow.
  • Fineness Mark: Walking Lion with a 2 in a hexagon (for 2nd grade silver, .833).
  • Assay Office Mark: Minerva head with the assay office letter F (Leeuwarden), where the spoon was officially hallmarked at the time.
  • Date Letter: The struck Gothic letter h in a circle for the production year 1867.
Specifications:
  • Material: 2nd grade silver (.833)
  • Maker: Anthonie Kornelis Sieman
  • Place of Origin: Groningen (hallmarked in Leeuwarden)
  • Dating / Date Letter: h = 1867
  • Weight: 53.9 grams (solid, heavy quality)
  • Length: 19.5 cm (195 mm)
  • Condition: In absolute top condition. The silver has a beautiful patina around the lion's head, the handle decoration, and the razor-sharp silver hallmarks, allowing the details to be perfectly highlighted.
A magnificent showpiece and a valuable addition to a high-quality collection of Groningen or Frisian regional silver, historical commemorative spoons, or antique silver with an agrarian theme.
