This second-grade silver presentation spoon is a beautiful and powerful example of 19th-century Frisian craftsmanship. The spoon was crafted in the year 1889 by the renowned silversmith Hoogendijk Merkelbach in the historic Frisian port city of Harlingen and is fully and clearly hallmarked.

With a length of 183 mm and a solid weight of no less than 64.8 grams, this is a particularly substantial and heavy piece. The handle is crowned by a finely cast double figure of a King and Queen in ceremonial attire, complete with detailed crowns and a scepter.

The stem itself features an elegant openwork, twisted vine motif that transitions at the base into a detailed cast ram's or lion's mask directly above where the bowl of the spoon begins.

This type of king's spoon was traditionally presented as a highly exclusive wedding gift to seal prosperity and fidelity.

The back of the spoon and the handle display an exceptionally sharp collection of Dutch assay marks from the late 19th century:
  • Silversmith: The maker's mark 'H M over 232 in a square' from the silversmith workshop H. Merkelbach (Hoogendijk Merkelbach), active in Harlingen between 1856 and 1898.
  • Dutch Lion (2): The official hallmark for second-grade silver (.835).
  • Minerva head with the letter 'F': The office mark of the Frisian assay office in Leeuwarden, where the spoon was officially inspected.
  • Date letter 'E': The exact date mark specifically representing the year 1889.
