An extremely charming and rare Frisian silver spoon, crafted by the renowned Sneek silversmith Gerrit Hendriks Bos.
This beautifully decorated occasional spoon features a unique artisanal finial and is a splendid example of 19th-century Frisian folk art.

The spoon is distinguished by the very detailed cast and openwork finial at the end of the handle: a man (falconer or fowler) in historical costume proudly carrying a bird on his raised right hand.
The handle is elegantly crafted with an openwork pattern (with peek-through holes) and rests on a strikingly large, very expressively cast sun face / mask head with finely detailed curls and facial features. This mask forms the transition to a generous, egg-shaped bowl.

The back of the spoon features authentic Dutch hallmarks and maker's marks:
  • Maker's Mark: The official square mark G B above the number 142, the registered mark of G.H. Bos (active in Sneek between 1840 and 1889). This mark is clearly struck at the base of the handle.
  • Tax/Assay Marks: Features a struck Dolphin (the Dutch assay mark for domestic silver works) and a small round stamp with a Star, Import Duty / Re-assay (1814-1893): This stamp (a five-pointed star in a circle) was used in the 19th century by the Dutch Assay Office to mark foreign silverwork brought to market in the Netherlands. It served as proof that the due tax (import duty) had been paid and that the silver met Dutch minimum requirements, indicating specific fineness and tax regulations from this period. Sometimes the mark was also used on older, domestic objects (such as 18th-century silver objects from the guild era) that re-entered the market and could be shown to have already been assayed or exempted according to old legislation at the time.
