This very large and heavy silver commemorative spoon from the late 19th century is a magnificent example of the Historicism style. The spoon combines a rare, sought-after guild finial with a fascinating engraved historical narrative.

With a substantial length of 184 mm and a weight of no less than 68.6 grams, this is an exceptionally solid spoon. The stem is crowned by a beautifully cast, three-dimensional figure of a Marksman in historical attire, leaning jauntily on his musket.
The stem itself is masterfully executed as a gnarled tree trunk, decorated in the middle with an additional mask, transitioning into the bowl via Baroque scroll motifs.
The back of the bowl features a beautiful and razor-sharp heraldic engraving. We see a split coat of arms beneath a marquess's crown, with a snake in the left field and a patriarchal cross in the right. Surrounding the crest is the graceful text "Jan Khrutzer 1694".

Although the spoon was stylistically and technically crafted around 1890 in Friesland or Schoonhoven, this antique engraving with the year 1694 was intentionally added in the 19th century. During the period of Historicism, it was a very popular trend to adorn new silverware with historical names and dates to honor the glory of old family crests or ancestors. This gives the object an extra intriguing, historical dimension.

The spoon is marked on the back of the rat-tail (the stem's support) with a compact, layered maker's mark (presumably a Hanau-style pseudo-mark), which has remained partially illegible due to the specific shape of the transition. The construction and the high weight point directly to a prominent Northern Dutch workshop from the late 19th century.
