A beautiful Frisian silver presentation spoon, crafted in 1838 by the renowned Harlingen silversmith Jan Harmens Yskamp. This partially gold-gilt commemorative spoon is a sublime example of early 19th-century Frisian craftsmanship and is in excellent collector's condition.

The spoon is immediately striking due to the highly detailed cast and openwork finial at the end of the stem: the mythological and romantic figure of Amor (Cupid), complete with his iconic wings and bow and arrow.
The stem itself is executed in an elegant twisted braid design. What makes this piece extra regal is the beautiful, warm gold-gilding (vermeil) applied to the stem components, the transitions of the cast work, and subtly extending into the interior of the generous, egg-shaped bowl. This gives the spoon a brilliant two-tone contrast.

The spoon is remarkably complete, deeply and razor-sharply hallmarked with the official Dutch silver hallmarks, which are beautifully visible in the detailed photographs:
  • Maker's mark: The sought-after mark I Y above the number 55 in a square, the official maker's mark of J.H. Yskamp (active in Harlingen between 1826 and 1844). Struck razor-sharp.
  • Fineness mark: Walking Lion with a 2 in a hexagon (for 2nd grade silver, .833).
  • Assay office mark: Minerva head with the clear office letter F (Leeuwarden).
  • Date letter: The clear letter D in a circle, standing for the production year 1838.
Specifications:
  • Material: 2nd grade silver (.833) with gold-gilding (vermeil)
  • Maker: Jan Harmens Yskamp (IY 55)
  • Place of origin: Harlingen (Friesland)
  • Dating / Date letter: D = 1838
  • Weight: 50.5 grams (solid, heavy quality)
  • Length: 18.8 cm (188 mm)
  • Condition: In excellent antique condition. The silver has a beautifully contrasted patina around the detailed cast work and sharp hallmarks, with the gilded details well preserved.
A wonderful romantic showpiece and a valuable addition to a high-quality collection of Frisian regional silver or historical commemorative spoons.
