This exceptionally large, second-grade silver birth spoon from 1876 is a dream for any collector. Crafted in the historic silver center of Bolsward by the renowned master silversmith Pieter Johannes Fennema, this specimen excels due to its heavy quality, razor-sharp hallmarks, and a magnificent, personalized Frisian provenance.

The spoon makes an immediate impression with its substantial length of 21 centimeters and a solid weight of 57.3 grams. The stem is crowned by a beautiful, cast openwork historical plaque featuring the allegorical figure of the Dutch Maiden / Liberty. The female figure holds a spear topped with a liberty cap in her right hand, while her left arm rests on a Bible placed upon a classical column. At her feet, the Dutch Lion keeps watch, pugnaciously clutching a sword and the familiar bundle of arrows.
The stem itself is elegantly flat, decorated with a subtle hand-engraved flower and leaf sprig, and features a finely chased sunflower or rosette in relief. At the transition to the bowl, there is an expressively cast child or angel head (putto).

The back of the sleek, generous egg-shaped spoon bowl elevates the historical value of this collectible. The original birth inscription has been applied in a beautiful, delicate hand-engraved script:
  • "Antje K. Bangma was born April 25, 1880"
The back of the stem and the bowl display an untarnished set of 19th-century Dutch hallmarks:
  • Silversmith: The official maker's mark 'P.F / 228 in a rectangle' of Pieter Johannes Fennema, active in Bolsward between 1855 and 1888.
  • Dutch Lion (2): The purity mark in a hexagon for second-grade silver (.833).
  • Minerva head: The official assay office mark of the Dutch hallmark system.
  • Year letter 'r': The razor-sharp stamped year letter specifically representing the year of manufacture, 1876.
