Are you looking for an exceptional piece of Frisian history?
This antique silver birth spoon is a masterful and rare example of early 19th-century silversmithing from Leeuwarden. Created by the well-known silversmith Oene Swartwold, this spoon excels in both craftsmanship and historical value.

What makes this birth spoon extra special is the finely detailed finial of a rider on horseback. Furthermore, the stem is beautifully decorated with refined, hand-engraved floral and leaf patterns and an elegant centered sun motif.
The exterior of the deep bowl features an authentic, expertly stippled inscription:
"Joute Durks van der Werf born on the 17th of February 1820"
This gives the object a tangible provenance and makes it a fascinating piece for genealogical research.

The spoon is fully and clearly hallmarked on the stem and in the bowl:
  • Maker's mark: OS with an antler above it – Oene Swartwold (active in Leeuwarden, 1816-1824).
  • Date letter: M (for the year 1821).
  • Fineness mark: Walking lion with a '2' (Second-grade silver, 833/1000).
  • Assay mark: Minerva head (with the office code in the helmet).
  • Weight: 49.4 grams.
  • Length: 22 cm.
This spoon is in stunning, authentic collector's condition. The silver hallmarks are razor-sharp, the engraving is beautifully deep, and the silversmithing around the rider finial is completely intact. A valuable investment for the serious collector of Frisian silver.
